Y.E.S.S.-Youth Educational Support Services

S.A.P. or the Student Assistance Program is a systematic process using effective and accountable professional techniques to mobilize school resources and remove the barriers to learning. Student Assistance Programs are not treatment programs; rather, it identifies and refers at-risk students to the appropriate services.
Y.E.S.S., Youth Education and Support Services is the Student Assistance Program at Seneca Valley Middle School. Y.E.S.S. is an intervention and prevention program designed to help students enhance their personal goals in school whether they be social, emotional, or academic.   In addition, Y.E.S.S. also has prevention components with activities and groups that promote positive choices.

Y.E.S.S Process

Referrals

Any Staff member, parent, or student may refer a student they feel is at risk or in need.  All referrals are confidential but must be signed by the referring person and may be placed in the YESS box located outside the Guidance Office or given to a Y.E.S.S. team member. Students may also seek help voluntarily by contacting a guidance counselor or a Y.E.S.S Core Team member.

Assessment

All information regarding a referral is treated in a confidential manner and is gathered in a non-invasive way.  If a significant concern exists, the parent will be contacted.  Participation in the Y.E.S.S. process is voluntary and requires parental approval until the student reaches age 18.

Recommendation

The Y.E.S.S. Core Team will make recommendations to the student, parents, and staff regarding ways to improve the student's growth. The team will make referrals to existing school programs, liaison or community resources.

Follow-up

The Y.E.S.S. Team can monitor a student's progress in the referred program.

Confidentiality

Referrals are confidential. Recommendations to students and parents are also confidential.

Y.E.S.S. Program

Educational Support Groups: The Support Group functions as a safe environment for expressing feelings and a sense of belonging while offering the opportunity to gain self-acceptance and social skills. Support groups center on action and look at choice and consequence. Parental notification and signed permission are required for a student's participation.
The Y.E.S.S. Team offers the following Support Groups:

New Student Group: Support for new students at S.V.M.S. helps them to adjust to their new environment.
Skills for Living: Topics covered may include: self-image; decision making; stress; relationships; anger management; responsible behavior; conflict resolution; multi-cultural awareness.
Changing Families: Supports students whose families experience separation, divorce or remarriage.
Grief and Loss: Supports students who have suffered the loss of a family member or close friend through death.
Healthy Mind Healthy Body: Helps students accept who they are and how they look.
Aftercare: Individual follow-up support is provided for students who have been in treatment for mental health and/or chemical dependence.
