Many Pittsburghers – from tiny tots to the elderly – cannot afford to buy a coat or jacket. The homeless are especially at risk for getting frostbite or even freezing to death. With your help, Light of Life Rescue Misson provides free warm outerwear for the needy at their annual Coat Giveaway. SVMS students helped by collecting new or gently used coats for men, women and children – all sizes, especially extra large and by collecting winter hats, scarves, gloves and mittens for adults and children in all sizes.
The tab of an aluminum can is pure aluminum unlike the rest of the can, which contains paint and other residue. Recycling the tabs generates proceeds to donate to a local Ronald McDonald House. The tabs do not pay for treatment or night stays – only house operations.
Pop tabs are small and convenient to collect. Hundreds of thousands of pop tabs have been collected to benefit Ronald McDonald Houses.

The Seneca Valley Middle School service project, “Change for the Better,” recently benefited relief efforts for Katrina victims through a sizeable donation to the American Red Cross. For the first four days, students on each of the ten core teams at the middle school in Harmony, PA, enthusiastically donated pennies into five-gallon containers on their hall. Then on the fifth day, students and faculty deposited silver coins and dollars into the containers of the nine other teams, in order to cancel out their number of pennies. This resulted in some friendly competition among the teams and added greatly to the overall relief funds.
Members of student council carted the money and coins to Citizens National Bank in Zelienople. There they spent two hours with the coin counting machine, tallying the amounts of money for each team of students. Over five days, a total of $2,235.94 was collected for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The number of accumulated pennies totaled $1,652.01, and the silver and paper money totaled $583.93. Students and faculty agreed that this service project inspired generosity, making “Change for the Better” a huge success at Seneca Valley Middle School.

Presents for Kids
Condor students donated $570 to buy presents for needy children in the Pittsburgh area. They worked together with the 4Kids Early Learning Centers in Braddock to get presents to children. 15 students signed up to meet at Toys R Us in Cranberry to shop for the kids. The team is very proud of the fact that 87% of the students contributed to the fundraiser, and the team has had a great response to their requests for shoppers and wrappers.
