Purpose of Statewide Assessment System

The purposes of the statewide assessment component of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) are:

To determine achievement levels of all students in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics.
To provide assessment results to school districts for consideration in the development of strategic plans.
To provide information to state policymakers about student achievement and the performance of schools in the Commonwealth.
To focus the direction of educators by sharing assessment results and providing widespread in-service on the assessment techniques used in the PSSA.
To provide information to the general public about school achievement on the PSSA.

School District administrators, teachers, and principals can use these assessment results to guide them in making necessary changes to improve the curriculum and school programs.

Reports from PSSA are not available until the fall of the next school year and these can be obtained from the Intermediate High School Counselors.
