The meeting was called to order by Jen Hilster at 9:00am.  Jen quickly stated that politics of any kind cannot be discussed during meetings according to our by-laws.  You can review our by-laws on the Seneca Valley School District website.

Roll Call was taken.  Ellie Wolf, Gina Lecce, Tina Kooser  and Jill Hart were excused absences.

A motion was made by Michelle Podlaski to approve the minutes of our September 12, 2007 meeting.  Jenny Coyle seconds the motion.  Motion carried.

Principal’s Minute

Mrs. Graham said she enjoys seeing all of the guests at the PTO meetings and thanked everyone for coming.

Mrs. Graham said she is optimistic regarding school being in session next week and able to carry through with the Open House.  She said to stay tuned to the district’s website at www.svsd.net for information or to share concerns.  If there is a strike, the administration will still be in the building.  Book Fair will be rescheduled for a later time.  Mrs. Graham stated that any cafeteria questions should be directed to Mrs. Wells.

Old Business-
T-Shirts - Jen Hilster stated that the t-shirts will be coming home on October 11 and the students are to wear them to school on October 12.  Kim Alwine will be in the building that day taking pictures for yearbook.  If a student needs a t-shirt, he/she should see Mr. Zuccala.  If an adult needs a t-shirt, he/she should see Jen Hilster.  Jen mentioned that a local woman makes the t-shirts for our school and Mrs. Torso created the artwork for the front of the t-shirts.  Jen also mentioned that Sue Platt donated an adult large, pink PTO t-shirt if anyone needs one.

Tile Wall -Ellie Wolf explained that the framework for the tile wall is in place in the cafeteria and the work was donated by someone Sally Reichert knew.  Ellie mentioned that Mrs. Torso would like to send her ‘thank yous’ to the workers who placed the framework.

New Business-
Clothes Donations -Jen Hilster stated that the nurse’s office is in need of boys’ pants sizes 8-12.  Michelle Podlaski added that elastic pants are very useful.  All clothes donations can be sent to Mrs. Sikora in the nurse’s office.

50th Anniversary -Kathy Bachik discussed the CVE Dedication taking place on Wednesday, October 24, 2007.  It will be a ‘Sock Hop’.  There will be 50’s music playing in the school and tote bag raffles being given away throughout the day.  Each student will receive an anniversary bookmark and at 2:30pm each classroom will break for cake to celebrate the anniversary.  Kathy Bachik asked that you please see her if you are interested in volunteering to bake for this day.  The students are to dress in 50’s attire and the school will be collecting new socks for charity.  There will be a live feed from CVE from 1-3pm with radio station WISR(680AM) and Jenny Coyle will send out press releases.

Kirstin mentioned that there will be no PTO Points or calendar due to the possible strike.  She asked that all guests attending today’s meeting please sign in on the Guest Sign-in sheet.

Sally stated that the t-shirt income is located in the Special Projects category on the Income Sheet.  Please see Income Sheet.

Committee Reports

Teacher Representative
Mr. Zuccala
Mr. Zuccala reported that the next Parent University will be held on October 25 at 10am and 6:30pm in the LGI Room.  The discussion will be Writing for Kindergarten and 1st Grade and how it relates to the curriculum.  Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Zorn will be presenters and Mrs. Dinger and Mrs. Mason will be presenters for Special Education.  Mr. Zuccala mentioned that the Parent University held in September went very well.  He sent material home to parents who could not make it.  Mr. Zuccala also mentioned that all students in 4th grade should have received their PSSA test scores in the mail by now.  Mrs. Graham added that if anyone did not receive them to please let the office know.

Book Fair

Tina reported that Scholastic will not cross a picket line.  Scholastic is willing to reschedule if there should be a strike.  Tina mentioned that we do not want to ruin relations with Scholastic.  Please keep alert for Book Fair information to follow.

Box Tops

Lisa reported that she will be sending information regarding Tyson products home to parents.  Jen Hilster added that she gave the Box Top committee information regarding Sara Lee products.  Lisa stated that the first submission date for Box Tops is soon.

Fine Arts
Donna Hazy, Pam Taylor
Pam reported the first training for the TAG(Traveling Art Gallery) will be on October 22 at 2:15pm.  The art teachers will be sending a notice home to parents asking for more volunteers.  Pam explained that you are given a print to take with you along with grade level appropriate information and craft idea.  You then present this information to the classroom.  Mr. Zuccala mentioned that it is a different artist every month.

Fundraiser
Theresa Kane
Theresa reported that the fundraiser tally is complete and it brought in $29,000 plus donations.  The fundraiser items will be delivered on November 7.  Theresa stated that she met with two vendors for additional fundraising ideas.  Those vendors were Souper Suppers in Cranberry Twp and Heavenly Gift Baskets in Harmony.  It was mentioned that a Max & Erma’s night may not be a big enough facility for us to do in one night.  Mrs. Graham mentioned that maybe Max & Erma’s would be willing to sell gift cards during that one night.  Theresa asked that if there is any other restaurant that anyone knows who might be willing to do a fundraiser night to please let her know.  Barnes and Noble, CC’s Pizza and Bruesters ice cream were mentioned during the discussion.  Theresa also reminded everyone that she needs a co-chair for next year.

Holiday Shop

Sue reported that the new co-chairs for Holiday Shop will be working along side her and Jeanne this year to learn how the shop is run.  Sue sent around a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the Holiday Shop.  Sue stated that the shop has 8,817 items this year and all proceeds from the shop go right back into the following year’s shop.  Sue said she will call the volunteers interested in helping.

Hospitality

Jane expressed her apologies for running out of coffee for the Welcome Back luncheon for the teachers.  She said the percolator takes too long.  Becky Carmella thanked all the volunteers including those who baked for the luncheon.  She stated that they will be having a pre-party for the Fall Party volunteers on November 2.

Landscaping
Mary Ann Hulbert, Gwen Schlick
Mary Ann reported that she spoke with Mrs. Graham about dressing up the front entrance for fall.  She is hoping items such as corn stalks, hay bales, pumpkins and seed will be donated.  The courtyard is clean and looking great!  Art classes have been held outside and teachers have been eating their lunch out there as well.  Bird discussions have been taking place amongst the students and teachers.  It was mentioned that the school provides the main landscaping services but it would be nice to have the students volunteer with the “small stuff”.  The students really take pride when they can enjoy things that they have put a helping hand in.  Gwen Schlick asked Sally Reichert if the Boy Scouts could volunteer their time again for our school’s landscaping.

Legislative

Library
Barb Rosenbaum, Sandy Stanick
Barb reported that their first committee meeting was held on September 18.  The Adopt-A-Shelf assignments are ready to be sent out.  They also need volunteers to help with heavy traffic days in the library on Days 1 & 4.  The used book sale will be put on hold if there is a strike.  Jen Hilster added that if we are in session and the Open House takes place then we will also go ahead with the used book sale.  Barb mentioned that the last day to accept used books is October 10.

Market Day

Michelle reported we were given $400 for books for the library from September sales.  She reminded everyone that tonight is Market Day Pick-up from 5-6:30pm in the cafeteria.  Information regarding the Mission Pie Sale will be sent home in the Wednesday folder.   The form, check and type of pie should be sent to the Market Day committee.    Michelle explained that October is pie month.  The pies that are purchased are donated to Light of Life Mission and are served to over 2,000 homeless people on Thanksgiving Day.  Normally we make 10% of what we sell for Market Day.   For the month of October we make $1.75 for each pie we sell.  The November Market Day flyers will be in mailboxes by Friday.  If there is a strike, Michelle mentioned to call the Market Day committee chairpersons or order your products on-line.  The pick-up for November orders will be on November 7 at St. Paul’s Church which is the big, stone church located on the left after BiLo.  Mrs. Graham added that the Wednesday folder may possibly go home on Friday this week.

Membership

Andrea reported that the volunteer list is completed.  She asked that each committee please make contact with the volunteers who would like to help out their committee.  If there are any changes that need to be made to the list, please see Andrea.  There was 312 total volunteer hours for the month of September.  Jen Hilster added that the Executive Board is always willing to help out where needed.

Public Relations
Jenny Coyle
Jenny reported she sends out correspondence for special occasions.  She has been keeping the bulletin board in the main hallway up to date with information regarding Box Tops, Adopt-A-Shelf, Market Day and minutes, cash flow and handouts from meetings.  Jenny also reminded everyone that sign-up sheets for different events can be hung on the bulletin board as well.  Family Night was very successful and she will send her pictures to Kim Alwine.  She estimated that approximately 200 parents/students attended Family Night.  Mrs. Graham added that the staff and custodians helped clean up.

Special Projects
Marie Paserba
Marie reported that the Kindergarten Weight/Height screening went well.  The vision/hearing screening will be conducted in small groups with a 5 day notice before screening takes place.  Marie will email the dates to the volunteers.

No report.  Jen Hilster did state that Linda Orr is working on a direct link for CVE’s site.

Yearbook
Kim Alwine
Kim reported that 15 drawings for the yearbook contest have been received so far.  She reminded everyone to please send her pictures that they take throughout the year and CVE alumni pictures that anyone may have, please send to her.

Miscellaneous
Andrea Reiterman added at the end of the meeting that the Cranberry Women’s Club conducts a Christmas House Tour each year.  The proceeds are given to Habitat for Humanity.  It will take place on Sunday, December 9 from 4-8pm.  If anyone is interested, please contact Andrea.  Sally Reichert added that this club gives CVE $50 each year for the Spring Book Fair.
