Student Selection Process

Kindergarten/ First Grade

All kindergarten and first grade students are screened three times per year with DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills).

Subtests administered are:

Initial Sound Fluency (K only)
Rapid Letter Naming
Phoneme Segmentation
Nonsense Word Fluency
Oral Reading Fluency (1st grade only)

In the spring, kindergarten and first grade teachers compile a list of students who they determine could experience difficulties reading in the next school year.

In the fall, first grade teachers are asked to monitor all students and submit names of children who may require additional support.

Eligibility is then determined by:

1. DIBELS scores
2. Teacher recommendation
3. Standardized test scores
4. Assessments done by Title I Reading Specialists

Second Grade/ Third Grade/ Fourth Grade

All second through fourth grade students, district-wide, are given the Performance Series Tests three times per year.

Eligibility is then determined by:

1. District criteria for Performance Series Tests
2. PSSA (3rd Grade)
3. Teacher recommendation
4. Assessments done by Title I Reading Specialists

The students with the greatest needs are given first priority.  All other students will be continuously monitored.
