Scholarships and Contests

To help offset the rising cost of education here are some contests and competitions students are eligible for:

The 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is making it easier than ever to recognize high school students for volunteer service in the community. Students can complete an on-line application and submit them to Guidance by mid-October, 2007. Finalists are submitted to for state-wide review and a $1,000 gift. Then, in May of 2008, National Honorees are awarded $5,000 scholarships. Go to www.prudential.com/spirit.

The Pennsylvania American Legion is holding its annual essay contest. This year's topic is: Should we have a draft for the military? All essays must be 500 to 1,000 words and typewritten. Students writing winning essays are eligible for college scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $3,500 and a trip to read their essay to delegates at the American Legion Convention. Essays must be submitted to a High School guidance counselor no later than January 15, 2008. Contact Guidance for more information.

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is a month-long business program at Lycoming College in Williamsburg, Va. Those attending will learn learn decision-making, planning, and presentation skills while developing virtual companies with workplace representatives. The program is open to 10th and 11th grade students at a cost of $135. Information and applications are available at www.pfew.org.

The Council for America’s First Freedom requires writing an essay about religious freedom and the relevance in young peoples’ lives. Students compete on a national level and can win awards ranging from $750 to $3,000. On-line registration must be completed by November 27 and the essay postmarked by December 1, 2006. Next is an essay contest from the Daughters of the American Revolution National Society. The theme this year is different perspectives on the voyage of Christopher Columbus. The national winning essay receives $1,200 and a trip to Washington, D.C. next fall. The deadline for submissions is December 21, 2006.

The Ayn Rand Institute is sponsoring an essay contest on the novel Anthem. Top prize is $2,000. Applications are in the Guidance office or on line at www.aynrand.org/contests.
