| History Day . . . |
|
Jack Kooser, a freshman at Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, recently competed in the Pennsylvania History Day competition at Millersville University. Kooser earned the opportunity to participate at the state event by winning first place in the individual historical paper category at the regional competition held at Westminster College on March 23, 2010. Kooser’s paper, entitled The Frontier Nursing Service: Affordable Health Care in Rural America, focused on the limited medical |
services that were available for many individuals who lived in the Appalachian Mountains in the early 1900s. Beyond the competition,Kooser’s paper will forever remain as a tribute to his family. Through his research, Kooser discovered that his great grandfather served as the medical director of Hyden Hospital in Kentucky and often travelled on horseback to tend to the needs of patients in the Appalachian region. |
| Model UN . . . |
|
After participating in a mini Model UN conference in the IHS on the issue of universal jurisdiction, several students in the Purpose program took part in a Model UN conference at Westminster College on May 3, 2010. Representing the delegation from Canada, the students debated several controversial international issues with students from other schools. Among the topics included in the debate were militarization of space, promoting better education for women, accountability for UN peacekeepers, and long-term recovery plans in the wake of natural disasters. |

| Volunteer Fair . . . |
|
A first-of-its-kind Volunteer Fair was held on Wednesday, May 19, at the Seneca Valley Intermediate High School. This successful event was conceived by a group of 15 students in the Service Learning Scenario, organized through the Purpose program. Their goal was to create a bridge between the community organizations that seek teen volunteers, and their classmates who might be looking for opportunities. More than 30 organizations from the surrounding area, representing everything from firefighters and senior citizen care to drug prevention programs and inner city needs, were represented at this unique event. Ninth and tenth grade students were permitted to attend during their lunchtimes. The organizations reported that many students not only learned about their volunteer needs, but also signed up to help out in their communities. Organizers included Jaelyn Arrington, Laura Byko, Misha Demchuk, Rosemary Emmerling, Carly Hogan, Conner Kane, Erica Klasmier, Lindsay Klaum, Amy Kolor, Rachel Leake, Melissa Lynskey, Katharine Miller, Alexa Reynolds, Elizabeth Rohm and Emily Siebert. |

Congratulations to Jason Woolslare, IHS art teacher, for winning an “Emerging Artist Scholarship.” His artwork will be featured at the Three Rivers Arts Festival from June 9-12, 2010 (booth # 32). The emerging artist program is very competitive.
Additionally,Mr. Woolslare completed a solo gallery show at Zombo Gallery in Pittsburgh. The show ran from February 5-27, 2010, and was titled, "Jason Woolslare 'Where’s My Huffy?'” Colleague Aaron Shafer also displayed a few of his pieces in this show as well. |
The weekend of March 19-21, 2010, IHS art teachers Aaron Shafer, Jason Shorr, and Jason Woolslare had their work displayed at the Grey Box Theater in Pittsburgh in collaboration with Evolve Dance Productions.
Jason Woolslare also coordinated with Suzy Baer, Community Relations Director for Barnes & Noble, to sponsor a secondary art show at Barnes & Noble in Cranberry Township on May 6-10, 2010. The show was a huge success last year, and the Art Department hopes to have the show annually to keep a positive relationship with community businesses. |
| Don't Miss the GAPP . . . |
|
Seneca Valley High School has established a German American Partnership Program (GAPP) for the 2010 – 2011 academic year with a partner high school just outside Frankfurt, Germany.
This is an exciting opportunity, providing our students an invaluable opportunity to experience life and culture of Germany from an insider’s point of view. The German students will be here in October 2010, and our students will then travel to Germany at the end of our school year – June 2011.
Anyone interested in learning about the program may contact Frau Thorell at thorellga@svsd.net. |

Students artistically recreated the wall to bring attentnion to various aspects of this important event in history: its physical structure in East Germany as well as Berlin, the tragedies that ensued as people became separated and attempted escapes, the American involvement, the before and after pictures of Berlin, and more. |
Students involved in the project included: Blake Norton, Tory Ley, Sandy Comunale, Miranda Huber, Stephanie Swaney, Janelle Stafford, Jordan Wells, Kaitlyn Livingstone, Chris Bowman, Brendan McKelvy, Hannah Baldwin-May, Danielle Jones, Colin Reynolds, Cody Baker, and Miranda Huber.
Mrs. Gabriella Thorell is the sponsor of the World Language Club. Also collaborating on the project were Mrs. Barbara McKeown and her English classes, who provided information about banned literature during this time, and Mrs. Catherine Dankosky, who provided historical and pictorial information. |
