The Guidance
Central program is a comprehensive internet career and
educational planning program that provides students with
assistance in investigating and developing post-secondary
options. This program is a tool for students, parents,
and counselors to target resources for each stage of this
process. It will assist students as they EXPLORE career
and educational options, PLAN future work and learning,
or ACHIEVE college planning goals. To access Guidance

REMINDER:
The S.A.T. test is scheduled at Butler and Mars High Schools on December 6, 2008. Registration materials are available in the guidance office. Late registration deadline is November 18th (with penalty). Applications are to be mailed from home. You may also register on line at www.collegeboard.com.
The A.C.T. test is scheduled at Seneca Valley High School on December 13, 2008. Registration materials are available in the guidance office. Late registration deadline is November 20th (with penalty). Applications are to be mailed from home. You may also register on line at www.actstudent.org.
SAT preparation courses are being offered at the following locations
- Penn State Beaver is conducting an SAT preparation course to prepare for the December SAT test date. This course is conducted on the campus of Penn State Beaver.
- Guidance Central offers a free online SAT preparation course which can be accessed through www.bridges.com (testGEAR).
- Additional information on all of these programs is available in the guidance office.
ATTENTION SENIORS: Writing samples are a critical part of college applications. The English Department provides a service to critique essays/personal statements. Students must submit the writing sample typed, double spaced and include the question, topic or subject matter to the library in the drop off bin marked college essays and pick up the critiqued copy a few days later. These bins are located in the front of the library on the right hand shelves.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
SENIORS:
Toyota Motor Sales is pleased to announce the 12th annual Toyota Community Scholars Program. This year 100 renewable scholarships, valued at $10,000 or $20,000, will be awarded. Seneca Valley is only permitted to nominate one student for this scholarship. To be eligible, students must have a QPA of 3.0 or higher, be active in school programs and be recognized as a leader by his/her peers and instructors, be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and/or community, and plan to pursue a degree at a four-year college or university next fall. Students who are interested in being nominated for this award should complete an application. Applications are available in the guidance office. Completed applications must be returned to the guidance office on or before November 21, 2008.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is proud to announce the 2009 American Civil Liberties Union Youth Activist Scholarship for students with a passion for civil liberties. Sixteen winners will receive a $12,500 scholarship as well as the opportunity to attend two Youth Activist Institute trainings. To be eligible, students must have a cumulative QPA of at least 3.0 and plan to pursue a degree at a college or university next fall. If you are interested in being nominated for this scholarship, please sign up in the guidance office on or before November 21, 2008.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals and Herff Jones, Inc. are co-sponsoring the 2008-2009 Principal’s Leadership Award. This year 100 scholarships, ranging in value from $1,000 to $12,000, will be awarded. Seneca Valley is only permitted to nominate one student for this award. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record. If you are interested in being nominated for this award, please sign up in the guidance office no later than November 17, 2008. The student chosen as Seneca Valley’s nominee will be required to complete an application.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is proud to announce the SAE Engineering Scholarship Program, which includes two types of scholarships, undesignated (corporate-sponsored), and university sponsored. Undesignated scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $10,000, and university sponsored scholarships range in value from $400 to full tuition. To be eligible, students must intend to enroll in an engineering program or a related science (math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies, computer science), and meet the minimum QPA and SAT/ACT score requirements for each individual scholarship. To apply students must complete an application, submit a transcript, and write an essay. Additional information and applications are available in the guidance office and at www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm. Completed applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2008.
CAP Charitable Foundation is proud to sponsor the Ron Brown Scholar Program for academically talented, highly motivated, Black or African American students who plan to pursue a degree at a four-year college or university next fall. Each year, this program awards up to 20 scholarships valued at $40,000 ($10,000 annually for four years). To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership ability, participate in community service activities, and demonstrate financial need. To apply, students must complete an application, write two essays, and submit an official transcript, two letters of recommendation and SAT or ACT scores. Applications and complete details are available in the guidance office and at www.ronbrown.org. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than November 1, 2008, to be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program and a limited number of additional scholarship opportunities. The final postmark deadline for the Ron Brown Scholar Program is January 9, 2009.
NROTC Scholarship: The US Navy offers NROTC Scholarships that cover tuition and fees, plus money for textbooks and a monthly subsistence. If you are interested to learn more go to https://www.nrotc.navy.mil.
JUNIORS AND SENIORS:
AFS-USA and Cargill are proud to announce the Cargill Global Exchange Fund Scholarship, a partial scholarship for students interested in a year or semester long exchange program to study in Latin America or Asia. To be eligible, students must be under age 18, have a record of academic achievement, and demonstrate leadership potential through involvement in school and community service. Applicants should also have a strong passion for learning about other cultures, heritages and people, and be committed to undertaking personal fundraising activities to finance the portion of the program not covered by the scholarship. Students must be nominated for this scholarship, although students are encouraged to self-nominate. Nomination forms must be postmarked on or before December 15, 2008.
AFS Intercultural Programs and the U.S. Department of State are pleased to sponsor the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program for outstanding high school students who want to live and study in Germany for an academic year. This year, 50 full tuition scholarships will be awarded for this program based on written and oral communication skills, motivation for a cross-cultural experience and academic merit. To apply, students must complete an application, write six short essays and a letter to their future German host family, and submit two recommendations. Applications and complete details are available in the guidance office and at www.USAGermanyScholarship.org. Completed applications must be postmarked on or before December 16, 2008.
The Council for America’s First Freedom is proud to announce the 16th annual First Freedom Student Competition. Three prizes, ranging in value from $750 to $3000, will be awarded. To apply, students must complete an online registration form and write an essay examining the First Amendment and the history and relevance of religious freedom in America and the world today. Registration forms and additional information are available at www.firstfreedom.org. Online registrations must be completed by November 24, 2008. The postmark deadline for completed entries is November 29, 2008.
JUNIORS:
Hollins University is proud to sponsor the 46th annual Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest. First prize consists of a $200 cash award, plus free tuition for the university’s two-week Hollinsummer program, where a creative writing class will be offered. Six second-prize winners will each receive a $25 cash award. To enter, students must have a faculty sponsor from the high school. Entries must be submitted online at www.hollins.edu/poetrycontest. The entry deadline is November 15, 2008.
